Tecno Pop 6 (BE7) Quick Specs:

This is a recently unveiled low-end android phone from the Tecno Mobile. And it is the latest model of the Tecno Pop series. The phone is also the successor to the Tecno Pop 5.

Like the Tecno Pop 5, Tecno Pop 6 is available in three variants. The first one is the Tecno Pop 6; the standard variant and the focus of this review. The second one is the Tecno Pop 6 Go; the stripped-down variant of the Pop 6. There is also Tecno Pop 6 4G; which looks exactly like the Pop 6 Go, but support 4G networks.

By the way, being the stripped-down variant doesn't necessary mean that Tecno Pop 6 Go is equipped with lesser hardware (and software) than the Pop 6. Because the phone still features the same camera set-up, the same 2GB of RAM, the same 32GB inbuilt storage, the same Android (OS) version, and an almost the same CPU as the Tecno Pop 6.

It's just that the stripped-down variant spotted a dated design, a minute smaller 6.0-inch display, and a lesser 4000mAh battery. The phone also doesn't support 4G networks like its big brother. In other words, Tecno Pop 6 Go is a 3G phone.

Meanwhile, except for few upgrades, Tecno Pop 6 retain the looks and almost all other features of the earlier Tecno Pop 5 (BD2P). Apart from having the same amount of RAM (2GB) and the same internal storage space (32GB), Tecno Pop 6 also features a 5-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel dual rear camera like the Pop 5. This phone also spotted an identical 6.1-inch 720p drop-notched display as the Pop 5. And it's also equipped with the same 5000mAh battery.

Yet, as i mentioned earlier, Tecno Pop 6 offers a few upgrades, or improved features, over the earlier model. For instance, while the earlier model was fitted with the MediaTek MT6580 CPU, Tecno Pop 6 is powered by the MediaTek MT6739WA. Though the latest phone's chipset doesn't offer a better processing power, when you compare it to the earlier one. Because the CPU still a low-end quad-core processor, it even has the same maximum clock speed of 1.3Ghz. Yet, the CPU is still preferable to the MT6580 (more on this later).

Also as i stated earlier, Tecno Pop 6 support 4G (LTE) networks (unlike the Pop 5 that's limited to 3G networks).

And lastly, while the earlier phone was pre-loaded with Android 10 (Go Edition) OS, Tecno Pop 6 is running on a more recent Android 11 Go Edition.

Still, except for those ones, other features of the Tecno Pop 6, including positions of ports and slots, are still similar to those of the Pop 5. For instance, Tecno Pop 6 also features a rear-mounted fingerprint reader and microUSB port.

Price And Design Colours:

The current price of the Tecno Pop 6 is around 54,000 Naira (KSh 11,300 & GHc 823). It's available in three colour options of Sea Blue, Sky Blue and Lime Green.

VERDICT:

First, compared to its stripped-down variant, i.e., Tecno Pop 6 Go, the selling points of the Pop 6 are its trendy looks and support for 4G networks.

And compared to its predecessor, i.e., Tecno Pop 5 BD2P, the main selling point of the Tecno Pop 6 is its support for 4G networks. Otherwise, the processing power and other features of the phone are still similar to those of the earlier model. These features are also similar to those of other 3G phones (in this segment) such as Infinix Smart 6 3G (X657).

Even, despite its lack of support for 4G networks, Smart 6 3G offers a slightly clearer and bigger display. The front and rear cameras of this phone are also better than those of the Pop 6 (and others in this segment).

Itel P38 is also another contender in this category. The Itel phone has an almost the same 1.3Ghz quad-core CPU, and also packed most of the features of the Tecno Pop 6. Still, like the Infinix Smart 6 3G, Itel P38 offers a slightly better display and slightly better rear camera. But again, neither Smart 6 3G nor Itel P38 support 4G networks.

But Samsung Galaxy A03 Core, also worth mentioning, support 4G (LTE) networks. Apart from that, this low-end Samsung phone also packed a much better processing power than the Pop 6 (and aforementioned phones). And it's also fitted with a better display.

DESIGN: Tecno Pop 6 share looks with the earlier model:

Unless you look at it from the back, Tecno Pop 6 can be easily passed for Tecno Pop 5. Apart from spotting an identical 6.1-inch drop-notched display, Tecno Pop 6 also retain the form factor (shape), 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and almost the same dimension (157.8x73.84x9.7mm) of the earlier Pop 5.

However, to make Pop 6 look more trendier than its predecessor, Tecno put a large rectangular-shaped bump on the upper part of the phone's back cover. As a result of its large size, the bump also houses the phone's fingerprint reader, in addition to the camera module.

The camera module of the Pop 6 also looks slightly different from that of the Pop 5.

Compared to the small, square-shaped camera module of the Pop 5, Tecno Pop 6 has a big, rectangular-shaped camera module. And it's placed vertically, and neatly, on the left side of the huge bump.

Also, unlike the Pop 5, you don't need to open the back cover of the Pop 6 before you can have access to its dual Nano SIM card slots. Because Pop 6 comes with 3-in-1 SIM card tray (and slot). And it's located on the left edge of the phone.

However, the larger bump and the rectangular-shaped camera module are the only things that visibly distinguished Tecno Pop 6 from the earlier Pop 5. Otherwise, the rest of the physical attributes of the latest phone are still similar to those of the Pop 5.

The 3.5mm audio jack is still found on the top edge, and the single speaker of the phone is also placed on the back, located towards the bottom edge.

Which also implies that the only two ports that are found on the bottom edge of the Pop 6 are MicroUSB port and mouthpiece. The volume rockers and power button of this phone are also found at their usual positions i.e., on the right edge.

6.1-inch Display:

Besides having the same 6.1-inch size as that of the Pop 5, the 720p display of the Pop 6 also packed the same 1560-by-720 pixels (282ppi).

Yet, apart from the fact that this screen is sharper and clearer than that of the Tecno Pop 6 Go; which features a lower or FWVGA (960x480) resolution, the screen also seems to be clearer than that of the Pop 5, in spite of their identical attributes (mentioned above). The white balance also look better on the Pop 6 screen.

Yet the screen is not as bright as that of the Itel P38, neither as colourful as that of the Samsung Galaxy A03 Core. Still the brightness level on this screen is decent. The colours also look good and natural.

Different CPU, Yet Almost The Same Processing Power:

Though, Tecno Pop 6 processing power remain as that of the earlier phone. Because the MT6739WA CPU of the latest phone is still a 28nm quad-core processor, and it also has the same maximum clock speed of 1.3Ghz as the MT6580 CPU of the Pop 5.

Nonetheless, the MT6739WA (of the Pop 6) is a 64-bit chipset, and it also support 4G LTE networks, but the MT6580 is a 32-bit chipset, and the maximum network supported by this chipset is WCDMA/HSPA+ (3G).

Yet, and despite the fact that the MT6739WA is also fitted with a different Mali-T720 MP2 GPU, this GPU (like the CPU) power is almost the same with that of the Mali-400 MP2 GPU that comes with the MT6580. Therefore, both of the GPUs are suitable for light games.

So, you should know that, although Tecno Pop 6 is not a fast phone, it will run many Apps, perform daily and usual tasks easily. As long as you don't try to push it, otherwise, Apps will be forced to shutdown abruptly. There is no better way, for me, to put it more than that.

Anyway, the 32GB internal storage space of the Tecno Pop 6 can also be expanded, via microSD card, up to 128GB.

Same Camera Set-up:

Though, despite having the same 5-megapixel front camera and the same 5-megapixel dual rear camera, the shots from the Pop 6 cameras, especially the rear one, still look slightly better than the ones from the Pop 5 and Pop 6 Go.

Yet, like its processing power, the picture qualities of the photos, from the Pop 6, won't win you over.

Meanwhile, both the front and rear cameras of the Pop 6 are capable of shooting 720p videos at 30fps (frame per second).

Same 5000 Battery, And Still No Quick Charging:

Tecno Pop 6 is powered by a 5,000mAh battery; which is the same battery size of the Tecno Pop 5. This phone also doesn't support quick charging like the earlier phone. So it might take you about three and half (or up to four) hours to fully charge this phone's battery (with its out-of-the-box charger) if it drops to one percent.
