Tecno Camon 16 (CE7J) and Camon 16S (CD6J) can be regarded as the affordable variants of the recently unveiled Tecno Camon 16 Series. Because both of them attract lower price, compared to other two variants in the latest Series i.e., Tecno Camon 16 Premier and Camon 16 Pro.
As a result of their lower price, therefore, Tecno Camon 16 and Tecno Camon 16S are equipped with lower features and they also look a little less premium (especially Tecno Camon 16S), when you compared them to the other two above.
Although, both of the two phones resemble Tecno Camon 16 Premier and Camon 16 Pro because they also have dot-in displays. However, out of the two affordable phones, it's only the Camon 16 that has the type of back cover and sleek looks of the better equipped phones. While the Camon 16S, on the other hand, brings back the entire design of the earlier
Tecno Camon 15 (CD7).
Tecno Camon 16S Maintain the Exact Looks Of The Camon 15 (CD7):
As a result of their Dot-in displays, both of the Tecno Camon 16 and Camon 16S resemble Camon 15. Yet, besides having Dot-in display like the Camon 15, Tecno Camon 16S features the same 6.6-inch display, the same 20:9 aspect ratio, and the same rear camera bump as the earlier model.
Tecno Camon 16, on the other hand, features a slightly bigger 6.8-inch display and a taller or 20.5:9 aspect ratio. This phone also sports a different looking back camera module.
In short, Tecno Camon 16 looks more prettier than the Camon 15 because it has a more sleeker body and a better looking camera bump. And Tecno Camon 16S looks exactly like the Camon 15 because it maintains the size and all the physical attributes of the earlier phone.
In the camera aspect, the slightly bigger and prettier Tecno Camon 16 maintain the same camera setup as the earlier Camon 15, i.e., Tecno Camon 16 features 48MP quad-back camera and it also comes with a 16MP Selfie camera.
Although, Tecno Camon 16S, on the other hand, also features 48MP Quad-lens rear camera like its bigger brother and Camon 15. But instead of having 16MP front camera, this phone is fitted with a lower 8MP front camera.
It should be emphasized that the 5MP Ultra-wide sensor among the Quad-lens back camera of the Camon 15 has been replaced with a 2MP Depth Sensing (or Bokeh) lens on both of the latest phones.
Both Have The Same RAM And Storage Capacities, But Camon 16 Packed A Better Processing Power:
Apart from sharing looks and size with the Camon 15, Tecno Camon 16S also maintained the same Helio P22 (MT6762) MediaTek chipset and 4GB of RAM of the earlier phone, but the latest Camon is equipped with a more spacious inbuilt storage space of 128GB.
Though the slightly bigger Tecno Camon 16 is also equipped with 4GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage like the Camon 16S, yet, this phone is powered by the recent and more powerful Helio G70 MediaTek chipset.
Meanwhile, just like their predecessor, both of the latest phones are pre-installed with the Android 10 OS (Operating System). Each of them is also equipped with 5000mAh battery as the earlier phone. But, unlike the earlier phone and Tecno Camon 16S, Tecno Camon 16 support 18W fast charging.
Verdict: In every aspect, Tecno Camon 16S is the same as the Camon 15 (CD7) (currently about KSh 16,999 & 70,000 Naira). In fact, the only three things that differentiate the latest phone from the Camon 15 is its lower megapixels front camera, its 2MP Bokeh lens (instead of 5MP Ultra wide lens) and its internal storage capacity; which is twice of that of the earlier phone.
So, if you are in the market for any of the two Camon phones, i'd suggest you go for the Tecno Camon 16. Though, Tecno Camon 16 features the same camera setups and RAM as the Camon 15, but the latest model offers slightly bigger screen, faster chipset and twice storage capacity. The phone also looks more premium and its back cover looks prettier. This phone also support 18W fasting charging.
The current price of the Tecno Camon 16 is KSh 19,900 (75,000 Naira), and it's available in three colour options of Purist Blue, Cloudy White and Misty Grey. Also, the price of the Tecno Camon 16S is currently KSh 16,500 (70,000 Naira), and it also comes in three but different colour options of Ice Jadeite, Blue Hawaii and Misty Grey.
The Front And Display Of The Camon 16 And Camon 16S:
Looking at both from the front, Tecno Camon 16 and Camon 16S look almost identical. But due to its taller aspect ratio and slightly increased size, Tecno Camon 16 is minute bigger and taller than the Camon 16S. Still, this is hard to tell, except you place them side by side and look closely. But if you want to distinguish Camon 16 from Camon 16S quickly, you'll have to turn them over and look at their back camera modules.
In details, both of the phones have identical Dot-in Displays. These make them to look almost alike from the front. But due to its 6.8-inch display and 20.5:9 aspect ratio, Tecno Camon 16 is slightly bigger and taller than the 6.6-inch Tecno Camon 16S.
Furthermore, though each of the phones' display features 720p (HD+) resolution. Yet due to its increased size and different aspect ratio, Tecno Camon 16 display has a slightly different resolution of 1640x720, while the 6.6-inch display of the Camon 16S maintain the same 1600x720 resolution of the Camon 15's.
In other words, the 6.8-inch screen of the Camon 16 has a pixel density of 264ppi, while the slightly smaller screen of the Camon 16S has a pixel density of 266ppi.
Different Looking Back Camera Bumps But Same Ports And Connections:
You can easily differentiate Tecno Camon 16 from Camon 16S by its bigger and square-shaped back camera module; which occupies large area on the back of the slightly bigger phone. If you look further, you'll also notice that Tecno Camon 16 has a more pronounced edges and sleeker shape than Camon 16S.
Meanwhile, except for the fact that the fingerprint reader of the Camon 16 is located in a slightly lower position (which is as a result of the phone's bigger camera bump), the arrangements of ports and buttons on the Camon 16 are similar to those on the Camon 16S.
Therefore, you have the Volume rockers and Power buttons on the right edges of both phones, while their 3-in-1 Nano SIM Card slots (and trays) are located on the their left edges (close to the top). The phones' 3.5mm audio jack, microphone, MicroUSB port and speaker are located on their bottom edges, however, there is nothing on the top edges of the phones.
Both Feature Quad Back Camera With Equal Number Of Megapixels, But Camon 16 Offers Higher Megapixels Selfie Lens:
Each of the Tecno Camon 16 and Camon 16S is mounted with a Quad-lens back camera. And each of the phones' Quad camera also features the same number of megapixels.
In other words, the Quad-camera, on the back of each phone, is made up of the same 2MP Depth Sensing lens (for taking pictures with blurred background), 2MP (f/2.4) Macro lens (for taking detail pictures of close-up objects), QVGA lens (for taking clearer low-light pictures) and 48MP (f/1.79) Wide Angle or Primary lens.
However, and compared to that of the Tecno Camon 16S, the front facing camera of the Camon 16 is fitted with an higher megapixels sensor.
In details, while the front camera of the Camon 16S is fitted with an 8MP lens, that of the Camon 16 comes with a 16MP lens.
From the above, one can deduct that the back camera setup of the Tecno Camon 16 and Camon 16S is almost the same as that of the earlier Camon 15. But the Selfie camera of the Camon 16S is fitted with a lower megapixels sensor, compared to that of the earlier phone.
Meanwhile, both the front and back cameras of these phones are capable of shooting 1080p videos @ 30fps (frame per second). Their back cameras are also capable of recording Slow Motion videos at 120fps.
Details On Hardware And Software:
Tecno Camon 16S is fitted with the MediaTek MT6762 Octa-Core chipset; which is also known as Helio P22. And this is the same processor that powered the previous Camon 15. And for its Graphics Processing Units, this processor is paired with the PowerVR GE8320 GPU.
On the other hand, Tecno Camon 16 is equipped with a much powerful Helio G70 chipset. Helio G70 or MT6769 is the same processor that powered Tecno Camon 16 Pro and the likes of
Infinix Note 7 and the recent
Infinix Hot 10.
Helio G70 is a 12nm Arm Cortex-A55 (+ 2x Cortex-75) Octa-Core CPU and it has a maximum clock speed of 2.0GHz. For a more pleasant gaming and movie experience, this chipset is fitted with the Mali-G52 MC2 GPU.
Meanwhile, like the Tecno Camon 15, each of these phones is fitted with 4GB of RAM. But instead of having 64GB storage like the earlier phone, each of the new phones features 128GB storage. And their internal storage capacities can also be expanded, via microSD card, up to 256GB.
As as i mentioned earlier, both of these phones are running on the Android 10 OS like the earlier Camon 15. But while Tecno Camon 16S is also running the Android OS with the Tecno's HiOS 6.2v custom UI like the earlier model, Tecno Camon 16 is preloaded with the latest version of the Tecno Mobile's custom UI called HiOS 7.0. Though this latest custom UI is still based on Android 10 OS.
Same Battery Capacity As The Camon 15, But Camon 16 Support Fast Charging:
Each of the Tecno Camon 16 and Camon 16S is fitted with the same battery capacity as their predecessor. In other words, each of the phones is equipped with a 5000mAh battery. However, Tecno Camon 16 features 18W fast charging, but Tecno Camon 16S, just like Camon 15, does not support fast charging.
