In the world of folding smartphones, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is the latest and the third of its kind. While the previous Samsung Galaxy Fold could be said to be the first one, Motorola Razr is the second, and it's only because it's was released ahead of the Galaxy Z Flip.

And, like the Motorola Razr, Galaxy Z Flip can be regarded as a typical smartphone but with clamshell (foldable) frame, which allows it to folds in half of it's height.

Meanwhile, as a result of its better build quality, durability and implementation of the Ultra-Thin Glass display (compared to the flexible plastic display of the other two), Z Flip is the only one among the three that almost get the concept of the folding smartphone right.

Because the folding phones are still in developing or earlier stage, their displays still have crease and they're are also susceptible to scratches. We saw this in the Galaxy Fold and the recent Motorola Razr; which make use of plastic OLED screen.
Yet, Samsung has not overcome this flaw(s) with the implementation of the Ultra-Thin Glass screen, because the display of the latest folding phone still has crease especially around the location of the hinges.

Though, the UTG display of Z Flip is fragile and is still prone to scratches, but compared to the ones on the Galaxy Fold and Razr, the surface of the Z Flip display is hard, smooth and feels nicer to touch. In other words, the touching experience, on the Z Flip, is close to that of a typical smartphone.

Apart from its better display, Galaxy Z Flip also packed better specs than the Razr. For instance, Z Flip features 8GB of RAM, 256GB internal storage, dual back camera and a better 3,300mAh battery capacity. The phone also comes with a Nano SIM slot, unlike the Razr that makes use of only eSIM. And despite its better features and specs, Samsung Z Flip also comes with a lower price of $1,380, compared to the $1,499 of the Motorola Razr.

Though, Samsung Z Flip is cheaper than the Motorola Razr, yet among typical smartphones, Z Flip is an expensive phone. Because the Samsung folding phone is more expensive than most of the flagship phones like the iPhone 11 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, in fact, the price of the Z Flip is just a little less than those of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Despite attracting higher price than these flagship phones, Z Flip features lower processing power, lower RAMs and lower battery capacity. Even, its durability, compared to that of a typical smartphone, is questionable.
Then what are the advantages of the Z Flip?.
Well, the first and the main advantage of Z Flip is its ability to become smaller or ability to occupy or fuit into small space when folded, compared to a typical smartphone.

Another advantage of the Z Flip lies in its ability to sit on a flat surface like a laptop, as a result, Samsung Z Flip can be used for hands-free video calls, video conferencing and chats.

Also you can quickly check the time, or check whether you have gotten notification or not, (without opening the phone) from its small external display. Apart from those ones, other things about Z Flip are novelties.

Samsung Z Flip Design:
Though, one might still have doubts about the screen (which Samsung promised to replace for $119 if anything goes wrong). Nonetheless, Z Flip is a well built folding phone, and its clamshell frame promises to be a durable one. Samsung says the Z Flip hinges are capable of folding and unfolding for more than 200,000 times (which is equivalent to 5 years of normal usage) without having issue.

When it's folded shut, Z Flip suddenly becomes so small and compact that it can easily ocfuoccu smaller spaces small such as small purse and inner jacket pocket. And when the Z Flip is unfolded or opened, you'll find yourself looking at a big smartphone with a 6.7-inch FullView display that neither has a notch nor chin (like the Razr) except for a small cut-out (located at the top centre of the screen) which houses the phone's 10MP selfie camera.

The front view is similar to that of the recent Galaxy Note phones, but due to its taller aspect ratio, 21.9:9 precisely, Flip Z is unusually narrower than the Note phones. Also, the bezels (around the display) are lined with rubber to protect the screen during folding and unfolding.

Turning it over, the back of the phone is made of glass like a typical Samsung flagship phone. but the glass backing of the Z Flip is slippery and it also attracts smudges and fingerprints easily.
To enable folding and unfolding, there are hinges at the centre back of the Z Flip, and it's the hinges that separated the top back or lid from the bottom lid.

Samsung Z Flip comes with a pair of horizontal arranged back camera, and the Flash is found immediately outside the camera module, on the right side. And next to the Flash is a small, pill-like shaped screen call Cover Display, which is also placed horizontally, on the back of the phone, like its dual camera. The 1.1-inch Cover Display of the Z Flip, is very small compared to the 2.7-inch screen on the back of the Motorola Razr.

The small Cover Display of the Z Flip shows a few notifications such as the contact (or numbers) of the incoming call, it also shows time and battery percentage. And because the Cover Display doesn't feature Always On-Display (like the Main screen), you'll have to double tap the tiny screen or press the power button to check the notifications. It should be noted that, unlike that of the Razr, you are not allowed to response to the notifications on this small screen, until the phone is unfolded.

The Z Flip comes with both Face Recognition and fingerprint reader, and the fingerprint reader is found on the right side of the phone. However, the traditional 3.5mm audio jack is missing on the new phone, which means you can only make use of the USB Type-C earphones.

Weight And Thickness:
Compared to that of the Motorola Razr, Z Flip has a lesser weight, but the Samsung folding phone is slightly thicker (when folded). In other words, while the Motorola Razr weigh 205g, Z Flip has a lesser weight of 183g, but the Samsung phone has a thickness of the 17.3mm which is more than the 14mm thickness of the Razr. Samsung Z Flip is available in three colour options of Mirror Black, Mirror Purple and Mirror Gold.

The 6.7-inch Display Of The Z Flip Is Clear Crisp:
The 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED glass display of the Z Flip is more beautiful than the plastic OLED screen on the Razr. The colours appear more vibrant and the picture also looks clearer. The clearer picture of the Z Flip display may be due to its higher screen resolution of 2636x1080, which also makes the display to have higher pixel density of 425ppi.

Like i mentioned earlier, the flexible glass display of Z Flip has a little crease especially around the location of the hinges, but it doesn't do any harm to or affect the picture qualities of the screen around the area.

Qualcomm SD855+, 8GB of RAM And 256GB Storage.
Samsung Z Flip is running on the latest Android 10 Operating System, along the Samsung's One UI 2.1. The folding phone also features Qualcomm SD855+ chipset; a Cortex-A76 processor with a maximum clock speed of 2.96GHz, which also features Adreno 640 GPU.

Furthermore, the Samsung folding phone also features 8GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage space. Unlike the Razr, however, Z Flip doesn't have microSD slot for storage expansion. So, one is stuck with available internal storage on thses phones. Nonetheless, the 256GB internal storage of the Z Flip is more spacious than the 128GB of the Motorola Razr.

Z Flip Features Dual-lens Back Camera:
The dual back camera of the Z Flip comprises 12MP (f/1.8) Main lens and 12MP (f/2.2) Ultra Wide-angle lens. The Ultra Wide-angle lens has ability to capture 123 degree FoV (Field of View) but it doesn't feature OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) like the Main lens.
The Z Flip dual-lens back camera is capable of recording UHD 4K video at 60fps (frame per seconds). While the 10MP (f/2.4) front facing camera of the Z Flip is also capable of shooting UHD 4K video, but at lower 30fps.

3,300mAh Battery:
Samsung Z Flip features 3300mAh battery which is better than the 2150mAh battery on the Motorola Razr. Nonetheless, the Z Flip battery capacity is less than those of the recent Samsung's flagship phones such as Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra.
Meanwhile, Samsung Z Flip support 15W wired charging and 9W wireless charging.
