Unlike the competition, Tecno Camon 20 (CK6) was able to combine higher RAM and higher storage space with an AMOLED display. The phone also present the buyers with In-display fingerprint reader; a rarity at this price point.
Camon 20 also has an attractive design, good build quality and higher megapixel cameras. However, compared to the main contenders, the phone features a slightly less powerful CPU.
By the way, Tecno Camon 20 is the standard (and most affordable) variant in the recently unveiled Tecno Camon 20 series. Others (in the latest series) are Tecno Camon 20 Pro 4G (CK7n), Camon 20 Pro 5G (CK8n), and Camon 20 Premier (CK9n).
Basically, all of them wear similar looks. They also have the same form factors and the same AMOLED displays. Four of them also features the same front-facing cameras, amount of RAMs, internal storage space and battery capacities. In fact, the major differences between, and among, these phones lie either in their CPUs or rear camera setups. Otherwise, they virtually have everything in common.
For instance, if not for its more powerful CPU and support for high screen refresh rate, Camon 20 Pro 4G would have been the same phone as the standard Camon 20.
Also, the major difference between the Tecno Camon 20 Pro 4G and Camon 20 Pro 5G is that the later supports 5G, and it also wear a slightly more premium looks. Though the 5G-enabled CPU is also more powerful.
Furthermore, compared to the the Camon 20 Pro 5G, the most expensive Tecno Camon 20 Premier is equipped with a better rear cameras and support higher charging speed. Except for that, there's no other major difference between these two phones.
Meanwhile, as a result of its hole-punch display, flat back cover and similar form factor, Tecno Camon 20 shares looks with the earlier Tecno Camon 19 (CI6). However, putting them side by side, the latest phone looks a little less elegant than its predecessor. Still, the new phone has a better build quality and it's IP53 (dust and splash resistant) certified.
Apart from the similar looks, Tecno Camon 20 also retain the earlier phone's CPU, battery capacity, and rear camera setup. However, as a result of its AMOLED panel, the display of the latest phone looks more prettier than that of the earlier one; which featured an IPS-LCD panel.
Camon 20 is also equipped with an higher RAM, twice storage space and recent android OS. The phone also features an higher megapixel front-facing camera. And as i mentioned earlier, and compared to the side-mounted fingerprint reader of the earlier model, Camon 20 features In-display fingerprint reader.
However, despite looking a little less elegant than its predecessor, still, as a result of a similar form-factor, circular camera modules, and a hole-punch display, Camon 20 maintain the same sleek design. Even, compared to the earlier phone's slightly curved edges, the latest Camon comes with a more stylish flat edges. The hole-punch or camera cut-out on the latest phone is also smaller.
Despite that the sleek design is common among most of the recent affordable mid-range phones, yet, by virtue of its smaller camera cut-out and thinner bezels, Camon 20 looks more classier and has a slightly higher screen-to-body ratio than many of them.
On the back of the Tecno Camon 20 is a 64-megapixel triple camera; which is the same camera setup on the back of the Camon 19, however the latest phone's front-facing camera has a 32-megapixel sensor; an upgrade from the 16-megapixel sensor on the front of the earlier phone.
As a result of its higher megapixel selfie camera, Camon 20 was able to take a more detailed selfies than the Camon 19. Even, despite having the same rear camera setup, the shots from the rear camera of the Camon 20 are slightly more detailed than those of the Camon 19.
However, compared to those of the earlier phone and a few other contenders, photos taken with the Camon 20 cameras have a slightly saturated colours.
Despite wearing a more premium and sleeker looks than most of the competitions, the first selling point of this phone is the screen. It should be recalled that the 6.8-inch IPS-LCD display of the earlier Camon 19 was one of the nicest looking IPS-LCD screens in its class. Yet, the minute smaller 6.67-inch display of the latest phone is more prettier. Though the screen is still a 1080p one, yet, because it's an AMOLED, it renders a more richer colours and has an higher brightness level than the one on the earlier model.
Even, among the competitions with a similar AMOLED displays, colours look slightly more richer on the Camon 20 display. However, while most of those phones (even the less affordable ones) support high screen refresh rate, Tecno Camon 20 features standard screen refresh rate. It should be recalled that the lack of high refresh rate is also the main con of the Camon 19 display.
In addition to its pretty screen and premium design, another selling point of the Tecno Camon 20 is its 8GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage. Although a few others in this category also offer the same amount of RAM and storage capacity, very few them were able to combine such higher RAM and higher storage space with an AMOLED screen.
Talking about its processing power. Tecno Camon 20 retain the Helio G85 CPU of the earlier Camon 19, but the phone is running on the recent Android 13 OS. Though this CPU is slightly less powerful, compared to what few other contenders have under their hoods. Still the CPU has more than enough power to handle tasks like quick multitasking and heavy internet surfing smoothly.
And to ensure a consistence smooth operation, Camon 20 features MemFusion (RAM Virtualization) like its predecessor. This features allows you to convert some part of the phone's inbuilt storage to virtual RAM. And while the Virtual RAM of the earlier model can be increased up to 4GB, the virtual RAM of the Camon 20 can be increased up to 8GB. Making the total amount of RAM available on the latest phone to be 16GB.
Also unlike many of its contenders and predecessor, Tecno Camon 20 is fitted with a pair of impressively loud DTS speakers. The single microphone on the latest phone is also remarkably clear.
However, the rest of the Camon 20 features remain as those of the Camon 19. For instance, Camon 20 retain the earlier phone's USB Type-C port, 5000mAh battery and 18W fast charging, though the fast charging of the latest Camon can go as high as 33W.
Price And Design Colours:
Currently, the starting price of the Tecno Camon 20 is about 164,000 Naira. And it's available in design colour options of Predawn Black, Glacier Glow, and Serenity Blue.
Other Contenders:
Infinix Note 30 (x6716b) shares almost everything with the Tecno Camon 20. It features the same design, form factor and 60hz AMOLED display as the Tecno phone. Although, instead of a camera cut-out, the screen of Note 30 sports a U-shape notch. Nonetheless, the Infinix phone still has the same CPU, amount of RAM, inbuilt storage and battery capacity. Note 30 also features the same rear camera set-up as the Camon 20. And the photos from these two phones look almost the same.
However, the front-facing camera of the Infinix Note 30 is fitted with a lower megapixel sensor. Also compared to the In-screen fingerprint reader of the Camon 20, the Infinix phone features a side mounted fingerprint reader.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 4G is another contender. Though the Redmi phone is fitted with a slightly lower RAM than the Camon 20, but it's equipped with a more powerful CPU. And despite that the Redmi phone is also fitted with a slightly lower megapixel rear sensor, the shots from the phone look more natural.
Furthermore, and despite that the more expensive Samsung Galaxy A24 is fitted with lower RAM like the Redmi Note 12, the phone is equipped with a more powerful CPU than both of the Redmi and Tecno phones. Also, photos from the Samsung phone looks more life-like than those of the Redmi phone, not to talk of the ones from the Camon 20.
But, talking about design, both Tecno Camon 20 and Redmi Note 12 look more attractive, and they are of bigger sizes than the Samsung phone.
Tecno Camon 20 Design:
Apart from the fact that the phone's camera cut-out is smaller than that of its predecessor, and those of others with similar hole-punch displays, Camon 20 also lack bottom bezel (or Chin). As a result, the front of the phone looks more classier and has an higher screen-to-body ratio, compared to those of the competitions. Also despite having flat edges, flat back cover and circular camera modules like most of these phones, as a result of its unrivalled 7.8mm thickness, Camon 20 is more flatter and more compact than many of them.
The phone also has a better build quality, and i said earlier, it is IP53 certified, meaning it's dust and splash resistant certified. Camon 20 also has average weight of about 190g. Although, the phone is available in three colour options (mentioned above), but its back cover comes in two different texture finish of either leather (matte) or glastic (glassy material).
And concerning the arrangements of ports and buttons. You have the volume keys and power button on the right side of the phone, while its 4G dual nanoSIM+microSD card slot is located on the left edge.
On the bottom edge of the phone is the 3.5mm audio jack, microphone, USB Type-C port and the first speaker. The second speaker is placed on the top edge. And because Tecno Camon 20 features Optical In-display fingerprint, therefore and besides a pair of vertically stacked circular module and an LED Flash, there's nothing else on the back of the phone.
Impressively Detailed Photos:
The 64-megapixel main rear camera of the Tecno Camon 20 shoot photos in 12-megapixel by default. Although, in this mode, photos are remarkably clear and detailed, still, if you desire an highly detailed photos, you need to manually switch to 64-megapixel mode in the Camera Settings.
Photos from the rear camera are clear and have high contrast. Colours are bright and vivid. However, as i mentioned before, colours tend to be on the saturated side. Nonetheless, HDR looks nice.
Selfies from the 32-megapixel front facing camera of the phone are also impressively detailed and clear. Though, like the shots from the rear camera, the selfies also have slightly saturated colours, and skin tone is not on point, yet, colours still look nice and solid. And HDR also looks nice.
The Night Mode shots from the front and rear cameras of the Camon 20 are surprisingly clear and bright. Colours are better processed and photo noise are low.
By the way, both the rear and front-facing cameras of the Camon 20 are capable of shooting videos up to 2k at 30fps (frame per second). And there's no Image Stabilization.
Nice Looking AMOLED Display, But No High Refresh Rate:
The 1080p (or Full-HD+) resolution of the Tecno Camon 20 display is made up of 2400-by-1080 pixels. In other words, the 6.67-inch display of this phone has an high pixel density of 395ppi. As a result, the screen is clear and sharp. And being an AMOLED panel, the screen also has rich and vivid colours, and it has deeper blacks too.
Even, compared to those of others that features similar AMOLED panels, the display of the Camon 20 renders slightly richer colours. At this price point, this screen is among the best looking ones. And it's really good for media consumption. The only con is its lack of support for high refresh rate. It's also not the brightest around, but it's really bright enough for outdoor usage.
Latest Software, Higher RAM, Higher Storage, Same Average CPU:
Out-of-the-box, Tecno Camon 20 is running the latest Tecno HiOS 13 Skin, on top of the Android 13 OS. And because the phone is fitted with an higher RAM of 8GB, and coupled with the fact that the MediaTek Helio G85 CPU that powered it is a mid-range gaming chipset, it was able to multitask quickly and jump in-between apps without lagging. Besides, it doesn't have any major issue playing most of the popular graphics demanding games. You just need to drop the games' Frame Rates or Graphics Setting a little, in order to ensure a consistent smooth performance.
And just like the way its RAM can be increased (through MemFusion) up to 8GB., the phone's internal storage space can also be expanded, via microSD card, up to 1TB (One TeraByte).
Higher Fast Charging, But Same Battery Capacity:
Like the earlier Camon 19 and most of other recent phones, Tecno Camon 20 is fitted with a 5,000mAh battery. Although, in default mode, the latest phone also features 18W fast charging like the earlier one, the new phone still offers an higher 33W fast charging.
And with its out-of-the-box 33W fast charger, it took Tecno Camon 20 about one hour and twenty minutes, to fully charge its battery from zero to hundred percent.
